I like a lot of MZ Andrew's work, but I'm sorry, this is not one of them. It starts off well, right up till we get to the island where we suddenly have people in far too good condition after being in liferafts at sea. In reality, they would have had dehydration, sunburn, possibly hypothermic and landsickness from bouncing around at sea. After that, it deteriorates into a cross between a fifties movie and a video game with crazy islanders, pirates, and sacrifices to volcanoes.There are so many escapes and recaptures that it is is plainly confusing. I wish I could say something nicer. Just no.Product details

Amazing, m z has done it again. She is my new favorite. I haven't found any of her books I didn't love. Wonderful mystery and suspense, laced with humor, just the right mix.
For anyone looking for the light-hearted, paranormal cozy mysteries that are M. Z. Andrews stock in trade -- you will be disappointed. This is a credible effort by a talented writer to move beyond the silly and light-hearted to a more serious venue, with more mature relationships that are not always heterosexual. If I had to put this book into any category, it would probably be something like horror/action-adventure.
I like this book a lot. It seems to be the first book of a trilogy, so there is a cliff-hanger ending. The only reason I docked a star was the stupid actions of the characters in the last third of the book. If you are being hunted by people who have lived their whole lives on an island, you don't constantly walk around in the open, light campfires at night and carry torches through tunnels where half or more of the islanders have gathered. You can get away with dumb actions in light-hearted cozy mysteries, but not in this type of genre. Hopefully, the author will rein in those tendencies in the next installment.
With those caveats in mind, I do recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a more serious work than this author generally publishes
This was a surprisingly good book. Action packed. I hope that there are more books in this series. I look forward to reading more.
I realize every book can't be all sunshine & roses, but this book was way too dark & disconnected. What became of the survivors? They escape death a half dozen or more times and then what? There is no ending, they're left on the beach, no ship & murderous pirates at their back. Dear heavens, how many times can they escape only to be recaptured? A potentially interesting tale was lost in telling. The most puzzling thing occurs when Maya suddenly develops paranormal abilities at the end. I understand the reason it happens even if it makes no sense and has little purpose at that point. It did nothing to enhance the story. First book in a long time that I feel I've wasted time reading.
Great read. Kept me entertained throughout and kept me guessing. Can't wait to read the next one.
Better than a 3 star, but not as good as a 4 star rating. I couldn't really decide what genre this book was supposed to be. For those of you who loved the tv series "Lost", you will probably enjoy this book. Others will more than likely not finish it.
I love her other series, but I couldn't even finish this book. It just didn't hold my attention. Looking forward to other new books but I won't continue this series.
